Below i have added two videos, the first is of Treacle our 9 month old black Labrador and the second is Timber our Golden Retriever who’s 2 years old.
I’m doing the same activity with them but they are at different levels as you will see.
29th January 2019
Treacle is a home bred black Labrador bitch.
In these videos i will try and give a step by step guide on how we train a puppy from the start.
I will try and keep these videos short and sweet just like your training sessions should be with your young dogs.
Regular updates of Treacles training can be followed here on our Dog blog
09th January 2022 - Rocky has retired and is no longer available.
You may remember Rocky from earlier videos, we brought him into the kennels when he was a very lively puppy and had already been into a pet home allowing him to get away with so much.
You will see with guidance and patience he is now becoming a good working companion however his exuberance can still sometimes lead him astray!
Fallowfen Training Kennels have residential training for new dogs but also provide refresher training for those dogs that have already been fully trained but have picked up a few bad habits or are starting to ignore the commands. These faults are best dealt with before the next shooting season starts.
Gundog training can seem an overwhelming task, but the secret is to break it down into small lessons, and only train when you are relaxed. We hope to encourage people to spend a little time concentrating on thinking about what they are trying to achieve, and help them find the resources to achieve their ambitions.
Gundog Training – where do you start?
If you are training a gundog with the intention of working it in the field there are a number of things you can do to make your experience easier and more enjoyable.
The first is to attend our group or one to one lessons alongside others as this has the advantage that you meet other people who have experienced the same sort of problems you may or have encountered. It is also a great opportunity to see how others cope with their sometimes wayward animals and it is good fun to mix with like-minded people.
Secondly you can watch some video footage of some of the dogs we have trained, you may find watching them useful.
The most important decision is to decide which sort of training you need, you can give us at Fallowfen a call and discuss your requirements and which direction would be best for you go in, I.e you may already have something in mind like going rough shooting, picking up, walked up shooting or beating, this can also depend on what breed of dog you have!
Dogs do vary quite considerably in the rate at which they learn so the training may have to be altered to suit an individual dogs needs. Throughout the lessons there are three very important principles which must be kept in mind at all times, you must stay calm, give very clear instructions along with correction and praise.
Whether you are looking to have a dog for the shooting field or a well behaved pet all the basics are the same, manners and controlled behaviour.
We do individual puppy lessons or group puppy sessions. Puppies should be at least 2 months old but no older than 8 months and MUST be fully vaccinated.
Our puppy training aims to provide a means of socialising puppies to place down a foundation for education as early socialisation proves to be helpful when interacting with both people and other animals, which can help to avoid many problems such as aggression and nervousness.
The basics include walking on the lead (slack lead), sitting, socialisation, handling, sit and stay (patience).
Our training can take place around our livestock, which include horses and sheep, We also have on site a rabbit pen containing rabbits, chickens and ducks.
